Have you ever noticed the iconic Red Brick roads in Lubbock? Downtown Lubbock still has blocks of red bricks that pave the streets.
The red bricks are almost as old as the city itself — built in the 1920s, the bricks have become a visual representation of Lubbock's historic downtown.
The bricks' 100-year history stretches back to the great depression when federal programs were formed to put people back to work. The brick-paved roads were the solution to the dirt or caliche roads that brought travelers into the city. Texas Technological College was founded later in the 1920s, and students traveled these brick roads on their pathway to higher learning.
